SHARK ATTACK: Sharkey nets 30th goal to lead Regiment over Huskies

Playoff picture takes shape with just four games remaining.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island native Dawson Sharkey led the charge with his 29th and 30th goals of the season as the Newfoundland Regiment ended their road schedule with a 4-1 win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Sunday night.

Alexis Michaud and Tyson Goguen also scored for Newfoundland (36-21-2-1), while goaltender Louis-Antoine Denault stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced to collect his 15th win of the season as a member of the Regiment.

The squad concluded its inaugural season road schedule with a 17-13-1-1 record away from the Mary Brown’s Centre.

The Regiment will now return home for their final four games of their inaugural season. Newfoundland will host the NHL’s 2025 fourth overall pick Caleb Desnoyers and the Moncton Wildcats on Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15.

Newfoundland will conclude its regular season schedule with a pair of games against the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21 at the Mary Brown’s Centre.

PLAYOFF PICTURE

With 75 points earned through 60 games played, the Regiment are currently sitting in third place in the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference, with a five point cushion over fourth-place Charlottetown, who have also played 60 total games. The Islanders would have to win a minimum of three of their remaining four games to have any hopes of catching the Regiment.

With second-place Moncton (94 points) out of reach for the Regiment, Newfoundland will now set its sights on locking down third place in the conference. The Regiment can clinch third place in the conference as early as this weekend if they can defeat the Wildcats in both games.

The Regiment’s future playoff opponent remains in the air thanks to a heated battle for fifth and sixth place.

If the Regiment lock down third place in the conference, they will play against the sixth-rated team. Currently, a pair of teams are tied for fifth place at 66 points, including the Cape Breton Eagles and the Quebec Remparts, however the Remparts have played 59 games to Cape Breton’s 60.

For context, the Regiment played the Remparts twice in the regular season and split a pair of games in Quebec City on November 21 and 22.

The Regiment are a little more familiar with the Eagles, as the two Atlantic Canadian teams have squared off eight times already this season. Cape Breton holds the edge in the season series with a 5-2-0-1 record against the Regiment, but Newfoundland has won the last three meetings between the two clubs.
