Rogues drop V-Day nailbiter to Sudbury

Make it four losses in a row to start the Rogues season

The Newfoundland Rogues dropped their second straight home game to the Sudbury Five, falling 105–100 on Valentine’s Day at the Mary Brown’s Centre. The loss marked the Rogues’ fourth consecutive defeat to open the year under new head coach Doug Partridge.

St. John’s fans were treated to a tense, back-and-forth contest. Newfoundland carried momentum into halftime after briefly grabbing the lead late in the second quarter, but the reigning Basketball Super League champions came out firing after the break. Sudbury’s explosive third quarter swung the game, and while the Rogues traded baskets with the Five down the stretch, they couldn’t quite close the gap as Sudbury completed the two-game sweep.

Charlie Marquardt led all scorers with 35 points for the Five, while Rogues guard Dedric Boyd paced Newfoundland with 26.

The Rogues won’t have much time to regroup, heading out on their first road trip of the season. They’ll open the swing in Lake Erie on Feb. 16, beginning a 10-game stretch away from home before returning to St. John’s on March 11 to face Saint John.
