On Thursday, the Newfoundland Regiment and the Mary Brown’s Centre announced a pair of Throwback Nights to celebrate the arena’s 25th anniversary.
On Thursday, November 5 against Moncton, the Regiment will turn back the clock and transform into the St. John’s Maple Leafs with specialty jerseys inspired by the Baby Leafs’ seasons at the former Mile One Stadium from 2001 to 2005.
“When this building opened, the Baby Leafs were the team that filled it,” said Regiment President and former Vice President of the St. John’s Maple Leafs Glenn Stanford.
“Twenty-five years later, seeing a new generation wear that jersey on the same ice is something special. We want to bring back the fans who were there from the start and share that history with the families just getting to know it.”
“For 25 years, this building has been where Newfoundland and Labrador comes together, and hockey has been part of its story from day one,” said Brent Meade, CEO of St. John’s Sports and Entertainment. “Bringing the Maple Leafs jersey back to this ice is a fitting way to celebrate that history.”
A second Throwback Night is scheduled for Thursday, November 26, but further details haven’t yet been announced, prompting fans to wonder if the province’s second former American Hockey League franchise, the St. John’s IceCaps, will be celebrated as well.
