IF YOU AIN’T FIRST, YOU’RE LAST: Regiment take over top spot in QMJHL with road win over Rimouski

Proulx makes 33 stops as Newfoundland pushes win streak to five games

The Newfoundland Regiment moved into sole possession of first place in the QMJHL on Friday night with a balanced 4-3 victory over the Rimouski Oceanic, pushing their win streak to five games.

Will Reynolds, Tyson Goguen, Matthew Frost and Alexis Michaud each found the back of the net for the Regiment (6-1-1-0), who became the first team in the QMJHL this season to hit 13 points this season. Netminder Antoine Proulx stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced in goal and stayed undefeated with his fourth victory in four appearances this season.

Reynolds’ first tally of the season and Goguen’s fourth paced the Regiment to an early 2-0 lead by the 11:25 mark of the opening period, before the Oceanic’s Mathys Dube cut the Regiment lead to 2-1 with his eighth goal of the campaign at 17:21.

However, the Regiment pushed back hard in the second period and built a 4-1 lead by the end of the second period thanks to the team-leading seventh goals of the season from both Matthew Frost and Alexis Michaud.

Caiden Pellegrino and Matyas Cutta scored third period goals for Rimouski to keep things interesting, but the Regiment defence would shut the door to preserve the victory and extend their point streak to seven games.

Newfoundland finished Friday night’s game with some strong special teams numbers: 1-for-4 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.

The Regiment return to action on Saturday afternoon with a rematch against the Oceanic at 4:00pm EDT, 5:30pm in Newfoundland.
