The Newfoundland Regiment (2-1-1-0) are back in action this weekend as the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (3-1-0-0) roll into the Mary Brown’s Centre for the first and only time this season for a pair of games on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT
In their last contest, Alexis Michaud (2G, 1A) and Ben Veitch (1G, 2A) each had a three-point night and goaltender Antoine Proulx stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Regiment downed the Halifax Mooseheads 6-0 at the Mary Brown’s Centre on Saturday, September 26. Matthew Frost (2G) and Tyson Goguen also scored for the Regiment, who finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
TALE OF THE TAPE
The Regiment enter the weekend coming off their biggest win of the season, a 6-0 triumph over the Halifax Mooseheads last Saturday night. Newfoundland is on a three-game point streak and has recorded a point in all but one of the four games they have played this season.
The Huskies are on a two-game win streak, earning home wins over Drummondville (6-0 W) and Val d’Or (2-1 OTW) last weekend.
BIG SPECIAL TEAMS WEEKEND AHEAD
The Regiment are the only team in the QMJHL who haven’t yet scored a power play goal. Through their first four games of the season, the Regiment are a combined 0-for-15 on the power play. On the flip side, the visiting Huskies boast the second-best power play in the league, notching seven power play goals on 17 opportunities, good for a 41.2 power play percentage.
However, the Regiment will be in tough against a stingy Huskies penalty kill, which has allowed just one power play goal against in 12 opposition opportunities. Newfoundland’s penalty kill has been sturdy, ranking 10th in the league at 78.9% (15-for-19).
KEEP AN EYE ON
Regiment forward Matthew Frost leads the Regiment and is tied for fourth overall in the QMJHL with five goals through his first four games.
Louis-Francois Belanger (4A) is on a four-game point streak, and is the only member of the Regiment to have recorded a point in every game thus far this season.
Tyson Goguen (1G, 2A) and Alexis Michaud (4G, 1A) will both enter Saturday night’s game on three-game point streaks. Michaud is also on a three-game goal scoring streak.
As for the opposition, Huskies’ winger Eliot Ogonowski leads the squad with four goals and four assists for eight points in his first four games of the season. He, along with Antoine St-Laurent (5A) enter this weekend on four-game point streaks.
The Regiment and Huskies will square off on Saturday night at 7:00pm, and again at 3:00pm on Sunday afternoon.
After this weekend’s action, the Regiment will embark on their first road trip of the season; a seven-game trek with games in Blainville-Boisbriand, Rimouski (x2), Shawinigan, Baie-Comeau (x2) and Drummondville.
Following their upcoming road trip, the Regiment’s next home game is Saturday, October 24 against Victoriaville.
