SERIES PREVIEW: Reynolds set for season debut as Regiment host Mooseheads

Regiment seeking back-to-back wins for the first time in new 2026-27 season.

The Newfoundland Regiment (1-1-0-0) are back in action at the Mary Brown’s Centre on Friday and Saturday night as the Halifax Mooseheads (1-0-1-0) roll into town for the first time this season.

LAST TIME OUT

On Opening Weekend, the Regiment dropped their first game of the season on Friday, but bounced back with their first win of the season on Saturday night.

On Friday, new recruit Matthew Frost netted the first Regiment goal of the season and Dmitriy Kubantsev scored the first goal of his QMJHL career, however the Saint John Sea Dogs scored three power play goals en route to a 4-2 victory. Netminder Louis-Antoine Denault faced 39 shots and finished the game with 35 saves.

One night later, Frost struck again, this time with two goals and an assist and Phenwick MacLean scored his first QMJHL goal to lift the Regiment to their first win of the season by a score of 4-2. Alexis Michaud also scored for the Regiment, while goaltender Antoine Proulx collected 37 saves for his first win of the season.

TALE OF THE TAPE

The Mooseheads roll into St. John’s sporting a 1-0-1-1 record through their first two games of the season.

Halifax earned its first victory on Opening Night with a 5-4 shootout victory on the road in Cape Breton, but would drop their home opener 24 hours later 6-5 in overtime to the Moncton Wildcats.

For context, the Regiment and Mooseheads squared off eight times during the 2025-26 season, with the Regiment earning the edge in the season series with a 6-2-0-0 record against Halifax.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

While the Regiment may have the youngest roster in the QMJHL, the club’s newest members have already proven their worth through the club’s first two games of the season.

Five of the club’s new faces, including Matthew Frost, Phenwick MacLean, Dmitriy Kubantsev, William Lundqvist and Jacob Veilleux have already recorded their first point with the Regiment.

BIG SPECIAL TEAMS BATTLE AHEAD

On Opening Night against Saint John, Regiment Head Coach Gordie Dwyer admitted that the squad’s struggling special teams “were definitely the difference” and the team will need to keep a close eye on the power play and penalty kill if they wish to be successful against the Mooseheads this weekend.

Through their first two games of the season, the Regiment have yet to score a power play goal (0-for-7) and boast a meagre 60% penalty kill (6-for-10).

On the other hand, the Mooseheads power play has been quite productive to start the season, scoring three times on 10 power play opportunities (30%) through their first two games. Halifax, like Newfoundland, will be looking to improve on their penalty kill this weekend. At time of publication, the Mooseheads are tied for the QMJHL’s worst penalty kill percentage at just 42.9% (3-for-7).

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Regiment newcomer Matthew Frost has scored a goal in each of his two games to start the season and currently leads the Regiment in goals (3) and points (4) and is the only member of the Regiment to score more than a single goal thus far this season.

Beyond Frost, Regiment fans will be pleased to watch defenseman Will Reynolds make his season debut this weekend against Halifax. Reynolds, a 19-year-old Nasonworth, New Brunswick native, missed the Regiment’s first two games of the season while attending NHL training camp in Seattle. He was reassigned by the Kraken earlier this week.

Mooseheads forward Quinn Kennedy currently leads the QMJHL in points (8) and is tied for the league lead in goals (3) through his first two games of the season.

Halifax defensemen Malik L’Italien, who is slated as a potential first round pick ahead of the 2027 NHL Entry Draft, has recorded three assists in his first two games this season.
