“THE KEY TO WINNING”: Regiment sweep weekend series with another OT win over Huskies

Regiment claim third consecutive victory ahead of their first road trip of the season

Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia’s Maddex Marmulak was the  hero on Sunday afternoon for the Newfoundland Regiment, scoring his first two goals of the season, including the game-winner in overtime as the Regiment completed the weekend sweep of the visiting Rouyn-Noranda Huskies with a 3-2 victory at the Mary Brown’s Centre.

The victory gives the Regiment (4-1-1-0) the weekend sweep over the Huskies, who will now embark on their first road trip of the young season boasting a three-game win streak and points in five straight games.

“They were great team-building wins,” Head Coach Gordie Dwyer told NLSN.

“We got contributions from everybody throughout our lineup. I thought our goaltending was solid and our defence played really well. I thought we were physical in how we played. The guys stuck with it, and that’s the key to winning.”

NO LEAD? NO PROBLEM.

Matthew Frost also scored for the Regiment , and goaltender Antoine Proulx stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced to lock down the victory, his third of the campaign.

For the second consecutive game, the Regiment were able to secure the win and the full two points despite never having the lead during regulation time.

Huskies forward Charles Laforest opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 11:07 mark of the opening period, but Marmulak’s first goal of the game just over six minutes later tied the game at 1-1.

Jayden Pominville, son of former Buffalo Sabre Jason Pominville, helped the Huskies regain the lead with just over a minute remaining in the first to give the visitors a 2-1 edge heading into the second period.

However, the lone goal of the final two periods would belong to the Regiment. Streaking down the left wing with some speed, newcomer Matthew Frost sent a slippery wrist shot over the blocker of Huskies’ starter Zachary Lainesse to tie the game at 2-2.

After a scoreless final frame, it took Marmalak just 26 seconds of extra time to find the back of the net. Collecting the puck near his own blue line, Marmulak picked up speed as he crossed centre ice, beat the defender along the right wing and sent a perfect writer past the goaltender for a dramatic overtime victory.

The Regiment will now have a few days off before kicking off their seven-game road trip in Blainville-Boisbriand against the Armada on Wednesday.
