The governing body of sport in Newfoundland and Labrador just launched a new campaign to take a stand against racism in amateur sports across the province.
This week, Sport NL unveiled its ‘Do Your Part: Stop Racism in Sport’ campaign as it works to create an inclusive sporting culture in Newfoundland and Labrador in which all participants feel safe and included.
“Newfoundland and Labrador has a reputation as a welcoming place,” Sport NL Executive Director Troy Croft said in a statement.
“We want everyone involved with sport to feel just as welcome at a baseball field or a hockey rink as they feel at home.”
The campaign is calling on the public to to submit reports of racism or discrimination in sport to Sport NL through their Safe Sport Complaint Mechanism, which will provide an impartial and transparent process to address any concerns or take appropriate steps to minimize discrimination in local sports.
“Racial and cultural discrimination has no place in society, and certainly no place in sport,” Croft added.
“We have a collective responsibility to speak out when racism occurs. When we speak out, we are making sport safer and more enjoyable.”
