EAST SENIOR FINALS: Liam Smith’s double overtime winner gives Blues 2-0 series lead over Caps

The Conception Bay Blues lead the St. John’s Senior Caps 2-0 in the series.

The Avalon East Senior Hockey League finals kicked off this weekend between the Conception Bay Blues and the St. John’s Senior Caps.

Following two close games, the Blues will carry a 2-0 series lead into a pivotal Game Three coming up on Friday, March 6 at CBS Arena.

Game One – Friday, February 27 at CBS Arena

Nicklas Lindstrom, Cole Gosse and Nathan Kelly paced the Blues to a 3-0 lead and never looked back as the Blues took Game One by a score of 4-1 on Friday night. 

Danny Wicks also scored into the empty net for the Blues, while Evan White replied for the Caps just 15 seconds into the third period. 

Matthew Jenkins picked up the win in goal stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced, while his Caps counterpart Kyle Downer made 34 saves on 37 shots.

Game Two – Saturday, February 28 at Jack Byrne Arena

Liam Smith was the hero for the Blues in Game Two, scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift Conception Bay to a 4-3 win over the Caps in Game Two in Torbay on Saturday night. 

Lee Dower (2G) and Danny Wicks also scored for the Blues, while Mark Rumsey, Kyle McGrath and Michael Cole replied for St. John’s. 

Matthew Jenkins once again stood tall in goal with 40 saves, while Kyle Downer replied with 37 of his own between the pipes for the Caps.
